The History
Borobudur
History comes alive as you step into the realm of Borobudur—the remains of the sacred temple untouched from its prime during the reign of the Sailendradynasty in the 9th century. When the British invaded Java, local Indonesians told Sir Stamford Raffles, the officer who ruled then Java, of the hidden site in the 18th century, sparking the westerner’s interest of its existence.

The History
Prambanan
Another historic sacred temple in the vicinity of the area is the Prambanan temple, where a neighbouring Hindu dynasty of Sanjaya built its legacy in the 9th century. The myth surrounding the temple tells the tale of Roro Jonggrang. It is said that she asked a prince of a neighbouring kingdom to make one thousand temples to marry her. Unfortunately due to her own trickery, she ended up being the face of the last of a thousand temples. Aside from the myth, the temple was a political representation of what was, at the time, the most powerful ruler in the dynasty
